REUNION 2005 - BALTIMORE MARYLAND

The 2005 reunion was a great success. The weather was cool and rainy but the warmth of the friendship we shared kept us warm & dry. The trip to the Washington Naval Memorial for the dedication of the ship's plaque on the Memorial Wall was a wonderful and tearful remeberence of our time on the OLD CALOOS and of all our shipmates, especially all those who are no longer with us. At the ceremony Vice Admiral James D. McArthur, Jr., who served on the Caloosahatchee as an Ensign gave a short speech reminiscing about his time on the ship and how his experience formed the basis of his career. We then went to the new World War II Memorial. You may have seen it in pictures or on TV, but you cannot appreciate the full beauty of this Monument to a brave generation until you see it in person.

Friday night was again a special time. As we met old and new friends the stories, the food & the beer where abundant. (I am still hearing the one about Hitler surrendering on the Caloosahatchee). A special guest was Kelly Dunn whose father was Don Maddox, who was on the ship in the late 60's & early 70's. Her father passed away several years ago and her fondest memories of him were during his time on the Caloosahatchee. She came to the reunion in hopes of finding anyone who might remember her father. She was shocked to find so many of our member who not only remembered her father but had pictures and personal stories to tell about her father's time in the navy.

Saturday we went to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and took a walking tour of the Academy grounds. (since 9-11 access to the grounds of the academy have been restricted)

Saturday night we had our annual dinner banquet and meeting. Due to the efforts of my wife Susan Scheerer and State Delegate Bill Frank, the Governor of Maryland, Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. sent a proclamation stating October 22, 2006 as USS CALOOSAHATCHEE DAY in the state of Maryland.

At the meeting the election of officers was held. The results are:
Richard Frank - President
Ed Gable - Vice President
Paul Scheerer - Secretary / Treasure
(attached is a copy of the plaque donors list and the Caloosahatchee Day Proclamation)
